The OSHA or Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that anybody utilizing a counterbalanced forklift be given lecture style or classroom training. They also require that a periodic refresher training as well as a supervised driving program is finished. There is no minimum time requirement for the classroom training or supervised driving. Additionally, there is no frequency mandated for the refresher training either.
The weight of the counterbalance forklift is utilized to balance its load using its own weight. The forklift forks are in a fixed position but could be lowered and raised to secure and move loads. The forks run parallel to the body of the forklift. OSHA require that people who would be utilizing counterbalanced forklifts on the job be properly trained on the trucks while being in the environment which they will be using them.
Classroom training or lecture style training provides information about the truck which the driver will be using. This training includes aspects like weight and load capacity, height, how to fuel or charge the forklift. It includes how to gauge the time on the engine as well as any forklift specific safety information including where to stand when walking around the truck. Either oral and/or written testing is part of the classroom training. There is no required minimum time for the training.
The operator of a forklift will have to learn to operate the machinery while being supervised. The supervised driving has to take place in an environment that resembles the existing environment that the operator works in. This atmosphere must include the type of terrain she would be traveling on, have similar pedestrian and vehicle traffic close by, and similar surrounding structures nearby too. There is no required minimum number of hours the driver needs to drive while being supervised.
